Auto lock

I understand when the devs says that there is no auto aim/lock and that it is only an animation to make the hit look good when the killer makes contact. If that’s the case, and there is no such thing, then why the **** does the auto animation kick in, yet I miss or hit a wall because of it??? If it is only supposed to exist when the game recognizes that the killer has hit someone, explain why it will happen when there’s a miss (which could have easily been a hit without it)
