Candyman

TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

This is just a post outlining a pitch for the devs to pursue the license to the Candyman character. No fancy fanfiction or stylized details. Just game mechanics and backstory.

Possible name: The Painter, The Artist, The Candyman, The Hook

Stats: Height, 6ft. Speed, 110%. Terror Radius, 28m.

Possible power: Mirrors. A large number of mirrors are randomly strewn around the map. If a survivor looks at the mirror, Candyman's image will appear behind them and their aura will be revealed for as long as they look at it.. After a survivor sees Candyman 5 times (or for 10 seconds), Candyman can teleport to the mirror. After teleporting, bees swarm the terror radius of the killer for 60 seconds, causing survivors to scream and become hindered if they remain in the terror radius when Candyman gains bloodlust. Survivors lose hindered status as soon as they exit the terror radius. Candyman does not lose bloodlust when breaking pallets but still does when hitting a survivor.

Addons: Some addons could change the hindered status from the bees to a different status, such as hemorrhage or blindness. Some addons would reduce the number of times survivors need to see a mirror. Some could increase terror radius in exchange for survivors needing to see mirrors more. Ultra rare could allow Candyman to teleport to any mirror on a 2 minute cooldown.

Backstory: Candyman was a famous artist named Daniel who fell in love with a white woman who he was hired to paint. She became pregnant and her father found out. He organized a lynch mob to kill Daniel. They cut off his right hand (his painting hand) and then tarred him with honey before killing him with a hive of bees. His ghost now haunts places that contain artistic elements and people who believe in him. His ghost sees bloodshed as his new form of art. Now instead of painting with brushes and pigment, he paints with his hook and his victim.

Other interesting facts: Candyman's presence causes people to become dazed and see visions of his art and swarms of bees. Candyman kills out of passion rather than revenge. Candyman's portrayal was made to be seductive and otherworldly rather than shocking and gruesome, though there are elements of his body which are gruesome, such as his exposed organs and ribcage where the bees reside.

What do you all think? This is a pitch and would be very unlikely to accurately represent the final mechanics. I think he would be upper-mid-tier with this.

That probably wouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to implement lol

I mean, he is a ghost, and in the first movie he flies out a window. But I don't think flying would be a good way to put him in either. Unless sort of hovering was just his walking animation, but idk if making a whole new walking animation would be necessary.

2 minute cooldown on ultra rare seems extremely long. Several gens could be done in that time. Also that sounds like a little too much counterplay.

  • BackByDaylightBackByDaylight Member Posts: 92

Yeah probably bad idea im not sure my guy i wonder how there going to get the Bee's to work?

  • TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

It could just be a particle effect the survivors see while they're in the Terror Radius, along with buzzing sounds and a screen overlay. That wouldn't be too hard to do. It's how flies and bugs are generally done in environments in games.

Yeah but you know how the community throws a fit if anything is above B tier

@TheHourMan Hag's Mint Rag gives her a 15 second cooldown teleport to any trap though. 2 minutes by comparison is basically useless. No one would use that addon.

  • TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

@Atrushan88 Good point. But he also doesn't get to set them. So maybe make the ultra rare remove his bees entirely and just give him a 20 second cooldown

@TheHourMan I feel like he should be able to enter mirrors, swap povs from the mirrors, and exit out of them. However his image will appear from the mirror he's viewing. Give him a 2 or 3 second enter/exit animation when leaving a mirror, and I think his power would be alright. Ultra Rare addon could be his image appearing in all mirrors whenever he's entered one. Having survivors just completely not looking at mirrors would be too much counterplay. I understand the looking at the mirror for 5 seconds is supposed to represent them saying his name 5 times, but I don't think he'd be a very good killer this way. Mirror placement would have to be near generators, but balanced to where he couldn't just get free hits from it.

Mori needs to be him picking them up, and his hand turning into bees and flying into their mouth.

Oh and if this is to happen it needs to happen BEFORE the next terrible remake of a killer movie comes out. I don't want to see another terrible remake killer be forced into DBD, especially one like this.

  • TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

Idk if the mori would fit with the tone of the movie, since the only way we ever see him actually kill someone is by tearing his hook up their spine.

I think mirror placement being scattered all over the map would work fairly well. It would mean survivors would have to be careful where they are looking. Maybe like 30 mirrors? If the survivors look at the ground the whole time to avoid it, it would make them easier to attack as well. Remember, in DbD the killer generally has to be able to just run around and hit/chase people as they desire. Otherwise we wind up with one people dislike, like freddy.

The mirror idea is interesting though. I think it may be a bit disorienting for the killer though unless he looks at a mirror's aura, holds the power button to look through it, then can hit the attack button if he chooses to go through it or just release the power button if he is done looking through the mirror. This would be too strong though if it had infinite range. It would put him on nurse tier

@TheHourMan I specifically remember him killing people with bees. This video has at least 2 scenarios of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXYDjxYBMbM

As for your power, I just don't feel like it would be able to work that well. Sure if there were lots of mirrors placed over the map, it could work, but like you were saying, if they just look down they wouldn't get hit by him because the minute his terror radius popped up, it wouldn't be important anymore to look down.

As for my idea, I don't think he'd be even close to Nurse tier. 3 seconds is enough time for anyone with sprint burst to get far away from the killer, and considering he'd have to wait 3 seconds to get inside a mirror and 3 seconds to get out of the mirror, it'd be much worse than Nurse. He also couldn't cut off loops like Nurse. His power would specifically be just for finding survivors and getting them off gens mostly. He'd be able to hook someone probably, but all it'd need is a cooldown similar to GhostFace's current cooldown and he should be fine. As for being disorienting for the killer, I doubt it would be. They have a first person view already, so looking from inside of a mirror wouldn't be that disorienting either. The idea though isn't just to "look through the mirror". The idea is that he goes inside the mirror with his power, then uses it again to get out of the mirror he chooses. When inside the mirror he could use M1/R1 on PS4 to swap between mirrors. Think of it sort of like warp points. I do think you could keep the bees and hindered effect thing, but make it permanent and lower his move speed to 105% possibly, since he'd have the ability to move across the map. With that I think he could be a decent to really good killer, since he'd be able to pressure gens quite a bit. Survivors would be able to see which mirror he was looking through since he would appear inside it, unless using the ultra rare like I said.

@Atrushan88 Yee I just meant his hand being turned into bees might not be as appropriate. Maybe open his coat and have all the bees swarm out? Idk, just throwing out ideas at the end of the day :)

So for your idea, how many mirrors are you thinking? I was imagining them being pretty much around every corner, so that's why I said murse tier, since he absolutely would be able to pop up in front of you

@TheHourMan Well his entire body is made of bees, even his skin isn't real, iirc. That's why I went with that idea. Although mimicking that kill would be possible as well.

For my idea, I'd say at least one around(and facing) every gen. Possibly some extras. Nothing like 30. Maybe 10 or so I guess? For addons he could have power recovery ones for traversing faster, different effects for his bees(though not blind, as I can't imagine being blinded while running from the killer would do much good, except for maybe windows of opportunity). Hindered would probably be best anyways due to him being slow so maybe not. I'd always have a mirror in the basement for sure though.

I think having them at gens may be a smidge too much like Freddy's teleport sadly. But it would also have the unique twist of acting as surveillance. Hmmm, damn. Candyman has a lot of gameplay potential for DbD lol. He also fits the tone and aesthetic of the game so well! T-T

@Atrushan88 Do you think the new movie will fit the morbid psychological tone of the original? And portray Candyman as a twisted seductive artist rather than a slasher villain? If so I would be ok with the new portrayal being in DbD, but it would be really hard to beat Tony Todd's performance.

    @TheHourMan

This is true, but I really like the idea of his appearance being in mirrors and him looking back at you. It doesn't necessarily have to be ONLY gens, but I think he'll NEED ones near gens to be viable being 105% speed, and like I said, at least one in the basement. While Freddy would be able to teleport to gens, iirc he has a decent cooldown on his and he doesn't know survivors are there. It's sort of like a secondary ability. This would be Candyman's main and only ability, so it'd have to be more specialized for him. Generators would just be one area he could view/teleport to, and it wouldn't be teleporting to the generator specifically, it would be mirrors that were at least a bit away from the generators. With 7 generators total(or is it 8? I think it's 7), that'd give him 3 other mirrors if he had a set 10. One being in the basement, so 2 others, probably one in the killer shack, and I can't think of another good place. Basically places where he would want to see/be.

Sadly I feel like the new Candyman will be extremely agenda driven rather than anything like the original from what I read on it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was "modernized" and Candyman recently killed in 2019 by cops.

  • TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

@Atrushan88 sadly yes. Everything these days tries so hard to be woke and Hollywood doesn't realize that stopped being popular in 2014 because it was being shoved down everyone's throats. I really hope the new movie will stick to Candyman as an artist first, and as a black man second. The race issue existed in the original, but it wasn't centerstage. But that may be an issue for a different forum post lol

  • Atrushan88Atrushan88 Member Posts: 2,065

@TheHourMan Agreed. Racial problems back then(and by back then I mean when he was treated how he was treated, not when the movie was made) were much different(and actually a major thing) than now, and it wasn't center stage. It played an important role and made you feel terrible about how he was treated, but he was actually treated terribly. I hope the movie will be decent, but remakes usually aren't. Look at what they did to Chucky and Freddy. Completely disregarded Chucky's entire story and Freddy was just bad. They should just stop ruining our favorite horror icons.

Anyways, any ideas where to place mirrors aside from generators, the basement, and killer shack?

Randomly around the map in the same places totems can spawn would be nice.

  • BackByDaylightBackByDaylight Member Posts: 92

@TheHourMan you know its going to be at least a year before this occurs and with any license we should give the devs more time im pretty sure they read the forums so we probably shouldn't just bombard them with request I've seen quite a few Candyman threads and now some Carrie ones to which would be appropriate, her tragedy the way it ends fits the lore of dbd perfect. Also In the mean time do you think the next we will have a licensed chapter or orginal male or female ?

  • TheHourManTheHourMan Member Posts: 1,031

@BackByDaylight I really hope the next one is original. I love all of the original characters created by the DbD team and I will always want more. I am guessing it will probably be female, since the pattern has been F, M, F, M ever since Leatherface and Freddy came out one after the other. Legion could be seen as either since it is 4 people.

I'm guessing the power will involve something along the lines of creating a secondary objective, since the devs have had a lot of fun with making killer powers add stuff around the map or use the geography to their advantage lately.

Also yes there has been some demand for Candyman, but it's good for players to speculate and pitch ideas to the devs. Of course, those ideas won't be copied and pasted, but game developers often get great ideas sparked by reading community suggestions.
