Tome challenge requiring locked characters

Just curious what the general feelings are about challenges that require you to used locked characters.

For example, the "Take Charge" challenge requires you to break generators with a skill the doctor has (overcharge).

If you have everyone you need unlocked, you probably don't care, but for those that don't have them unlocked, are you a little bummed, or are you cool with it?

Well, I don't really have a problem with them. All of the characters can be unlocked for free.

If you had to pay, I'd have a problem.

At the moment, the characters on the Tome are free to earn so it is not a big problem. Even though you have to grind to unlock them. If it is the perk only then it can be in the Shrine of Secrets, if DBD chooses to have it on there. However, if BhVr wants to do ALL characters then sooner or later they will do the Auric Cells only ones. Which will be more tiresome.

It's just one challange and that doesnt block any path for your tome. In total you just have 2 DLC characters that are "locked" and you can STILL earn them with some easy 9k shards... Idk why you complain honestly.

Not complaining, just asking what the general feeling is. I'm a new player, so I'm a little bummed, but it's not a surprise to me in a game with so much DLC. It doesn't prevent me from playing the core game, so it's just a minor disappointment, I'm not breaking out the pitchforks. The majority of the player base may have multiple hundreds, if not thousands of hours, so may not care, that's why I'm curious, as a new player, if I'm in the minority.

And I wouldn't exactly call shards "easy", I have 50 hours in the game and still need 3000 more shards to unlock my first character. You consider 150 hours (assuming the rate of shard gain stays the same) to unlock two characters to be easy? I guess that's subjective, but that is a lot of playtime for most people.

I feel this was yet another deliberate maneuver to get people to buy dlc. I'm at least glad my dailies only include characters that I have. I recently have had some bad experiences with another game I've been playing. They give me dailies for characters I don't even own. The daily is impossible to complete cause I have no desire to unlock said character so i have to recycle the daily.

I don't mind it. The rift is open for 3 months. I would mind if they were explicitly ones that require auric cells. That would be total bullshit. It would also be bullshit though having you do a tome for characters and then not having you actually play as the character at least once. It kind of defeats the purpose of dedicating a tome that should in theory be getting people to play those characters and killers more.

I do think that it points out a flaw with shards though. Dailies should reward some shards too. That concept works well in other games.

I was actually really disappointed when i saw who the archives were about this time. I expected them to at least get through the original characters first before doing dlc ones.

It's a very money hungry thing for them to do on top of the fact that they already have a battle pass system. Realistically, they didn't expect people to have enough shards to buy 3 new characters.

    @NoRestarts

I would even say the price is too low since it is a DLC character for 4 euros worth with a new Killer that has a own unique ability and 3 perks. Or a survivor with 3 perks and own unique look and voice ofc.

These kinds of questions are precisely why I never wanted things to be free by using in game currency.

It attracts all sorts of entitled personalities that tend to ruin games.

If you spend time to complete challenges or just play the game, you will eventually get enough shards to buy Jane and Doctor and complete remaining challenges, don't worry. I have already bought Jane and currently getting shards for Doctor.

Considering you dont need to do the archives at all, as they are optional, and missing like, a dozen challenges wont stop you from finishing the rift, it's fine.

The whole purpose of the rift was to draw in cash, I do t know how people are surprised by having dlc characters in the archives, which people seem to think are attached at the hip to the rift.

You dont need to do the challenges at all, but if you feel the need to, buy the characters. Dont act surprised that BE wants your money.

You can complete the rift without having to do those challenges.

You can also go back to older rifts if in the future you decide to get the DLC and want to do the challenge to unlock the lore.

You can buy Doctor with Iridescent.

    1. All characters needed for the Archives can be bought with Iridescent.
    2. If you don't wish to purchase those characters now, and save your Iridescent for later. All Archives will be accessible via the compendium, so you don't miss out on lore in the Collection, or bloodpoints.
    3. The only thing you miss out on by not using Iridescent to buy the character now, and completing the Challenge are the Rift Fragments from the challenge, as they will only remain for 57 days.
    4. However you are not losing out on Cosmetics you earn through The Rift, as every match rewards you with Rift Fragments anyways.

So I don't see any issue with how they did it. Actually honestly in my opinion this is the most fair and exciting form of Battle Pass I've ever seen in a game. The price for the Premium Rift is not too high, and the Auric Cells you win through the Premium Rift pays for itself. If you are not in it for the basically the free Premium Rift - the 1000 Auric Cells you receive from the Premium Rift you can put towards completing 10 more levels in the Rift, making completing it even faster.

The price of Auric Cells for completing the Rift isn't even so bad. It's like a little over a $1 a level.

Maybe I'm just old and remember what games were like before all the crazy microtransactions we see today, and somehow they still made money. The game costs $20 and comes with 15 playable characters. Even if you completely remove the costs associated with all the other things that make up the game besides playable characters, that equals about a dollar a character. More than half the cost of the game, for 2 characters, just seems steep to me, not a bargain, but that is subjective, depending on how fortunate you are in life. Some people have no concept of reasonable cost, because they have so much. Or they are just too young to remember what games used to be like. Anybody else remember Oblivion’s Horse Armor, and how “people will buy anything”?

I don't know if you know this, but companies make money by selling products. Developers need to make money to keep working on DBD. You don't deserve any updates if you are unwilling to buy a character to unlock certain things.

First of all, this had to come eventually anyway. There are only 7 Survivors in the Basegame and only 5 Killers. This means, the pool of non-DLC Characters is really small.

And as long as the Characters required need Shards, I am totally fine with it. You dont need to complete the Challenges to reach the End of the Tome Levels and you dont need them to complete the Rift. And you have unlimited time to get one of those characters for the Lore Pieces and the BPs.

Perks are in the Shrine, so you can purchase them with less Shards than the actual Character needs (even tho, I would consider this a waste of Shards in most cases).

So I guess its fine, as long as you can purchase the Characters via Shards. If at one point DLC Characters you can only buy with Auric Cells will get a Tome, you will not need to have the Characters, according to Peanits in another Thread.

It's true that they should be paid for their work, but its also true that video game companies make more money than the Movie, TV, and Music Industries combined:

EA made almost a Billion (with a "B") from microtransactions alone in 3 months:

Like a frog in a frying pan, they just slowly turn up the heat, so you get used to it, it becomes commonplace, rather than shocking. $5 for horse armor was an outrage in 2006, now its a "deal".

I just don't see how it's justified that the cost of 1 character is almost half the cost of the game, but again, "people will buy anything".

Maybe the devs could temporarily unlock the characters just to use the perks.
