Can crutch perks carry you to rank 1 (as killer)?

A streamer I like always talks about how a lot of rank 1 killers get there simply because the undying + ruin combo carry them to that spot. And I wonder if that is possible. I play with that combo a lot on Nurse when I play during (PC) SWF red-rank (mostly) primetime and notice it does put in a lot of work (the games are much slower). But when I play (what seems to be) solo survivors and/or rainbow ranks, I'll swap out ruin for devour hope (, which kind of isn't the best use of 2 slots w/ undying and probably is better with some other perks, but its fun). I tend to 4k these matches a lot, but the Red rank (SWF?) squads I won't 4k really (maybe 2k). I also play Legion at rank 1 and tend to 4k a lot (unless against all red-rank SWF) with the ruin+undying, as well as a play style where I just make games take forever and survivors use up all the pallets until they down. Both killers I run add-on less. Are these crutch perks carrying me ? lol

Even tho some perks sound powerful and sometimes get a good grip on Survivors, its never an assured thing, You still need to down and hook survivor, I dont worry about it and still end up Rank 1 all the time.

Ruin rewards the Killer for map pressure. The gens slow down if you chase different Survivors and try to keep them from sitting holding M1 for 80 seconds straight uninterrupted.

Although some people might not love playing against Ruin/Undying, the alternative is tunneling out an early kill and three genning with Pop. At least with this meta, the Killer has incentive to chase everyone and move around the map, which is a sign of skill in my book compared to the other way to play the game

You can get to Rank 1 without anything. The ranking system rewards you for playing and is basically worthless, you'll get there eventually with patience and grit. 'Crutch' perks just speeds up the process.

Ruin only does work if the killer is able to pressure survivors off the generators. It's useless if aren't able to do this.

It doesn't carry Killers, it just makes good ones perform even better, like how DS/UB for survivors.

No they don't, Ruin/Undying needs Map Pressure to get value

    Corrupt/Pop same thing

You do need to know the killer you're playing in order to get the most out the perks you're using (which is why I seldom change mine)

People sat Spirit is easy (Headset 4head) but you do need to know her power and how survivors react to get the most out of her

People say Pig is weak (and their not wrong) but investing time into her can yield a great deal of knowledge of the game and some survivor habits

"Carry" probably isn't the right word to use for the combo, but it definitely makes games easier, overall. I put it up there with old Pop/Ruin Billy.

Ultimately, the answer is yes, but you're asking the wrong question. You see, anyone running any build on any character will, if they're half-decent, eventually get to rank 1. Rank pretty much always trends upwards over time. Anyone who knows this game will tell you that rank is not, by any metric, a measure of skill, but rather a measure of how much you've played over the last few months. Red ranks are people who are very active. Brown/yellow/green ranks are usually new to the game or just came back after a couple months. Purple ranks are just people on the road to being red ranks.

Every perk is a crutch perk, unless ysou get no value out of it.

As stated already, you need to be at least decent, to be "carried" by the perks. There are surely a lot of perks that help you to reach red ranks, because a lot of killers wouldn't be red ranks when playing perkless. But also don't forget that survivors don't play perkless either, therefore it is quite OK to have supportive perks on killer side as well.

Just imagine how much time the killer would NOT lose if you just remove exhaustion perks. Hard to guess what is stronger, but just roughly you could say, to get the idea, remove Ruin/Undying and exhaustion perks from the game and the killrate would stay the same.

Ruin undying tinkerer corrupt swing chains red pain brush and you'll get rank 1 in 1 day.

Some combo's might boost you there, but you won't stay at R1 Killer for long.

You need to know how to play well in order to keep pip'ing,

    Or just play Legion :D

Yeah..I don't need it but every now and then (like 1 game durign SWF times) you get the genny rushing. And I really enjoy just shutting that tactic down. Other games tend to end with 4-5 gens still up if I run it though, which I feel bad about for the other side....but I still have fun lol

whyw ould you even want to be rank 10 or 9 as akiller right now, let alone rank 1? You'll just stress yourself for nothing when all you're facing are red rank swf burning off all their purple and pink keys and going out of their way to screw with you as much as they possibly can over the next couple or few weeks. If the game is gonna lose more killers, and it already felt like some didn't come back after the bloodlust weekend from my recent rainbow matchmaking streaks and slight increase of typical queue times when I played survivor, the game is gonna have even worse matchmaking just to throw those swf groups into alobby of some sort. You wanna depip as much as possible at this point, perhaps all the way down to 16 if you wanna wraith it while watching tv or something. A dumb achievement is not worth the stress.

Ruin/Undying alone doesn't carry you as you'll at least need map awareness but Ruin/Undying with a gen info perk like Tinkerer absolutely will because the game basically plays itself for you while you follow neon lights and hold W. The only time you'll have to worry about losing with this is against a good SWF.

I've stopped running the combo when I play killer several weeks ago because it's just so miserable to play against as survivor imo.

As long as you are decent yeah since not every game is against good survivors. Perks greatly influence games but they don't win them for you against good survivors, as long as you can do okish you can pip and the meta perks for killers help with that.

Besides it has never been that hard to pip like i got into R1 after i want to say 3 months of playing killer and i wasn't the best yet i still pipped even in games i lost. I feel that hasn't changed too much as safety pips prevent you from deranking too much so eventually anyone can make it to R1.

Your perception of the game and mine are extremely different.

Crutch is a bit hard to define. If you mean if you use the strongest stuff in the game, is it possible for that carry you to beat your opposition even if you're equally or even less skilled than them? Then the answer is yes, without a doubt.

Just like I regularly see red rank survivors who run in a straight line, I've often seen rank 1 killers who just hold W and bloodlust. Many times I've encountered r1 killers with fewer than 200 hours. I remember one distinctly who had 110h and iirc another below 100h (I would have to check my screenshots).

The thing is that most of that stuff is overkill in 90% of trials against soloQs, if you're a decent killer. If you're not a decent killer, then it does carry you. The recipe is simple. Throw in a bunch of slowdown stuff on a meta killer and chase. In those games I mentioned, you will simply win the war of attrition. The gens are slowed down while the pallets get used up. When that happens, you just tie up the loose ends. That's it.

Ruin+undying is simply a combo that works in that same direction and it's more powerful than what we had before, but it's not like the strategy itself didn't already exist.

To those downplaying ruin+undying, watch current tournaments where true 4-man depip squad seal team 6 SWF struggle against it. Now, imagine the same in pubs against uncoordinated survivors. The combo plays the match for you, that's why I don't touch it anymore.

  • crowbarmancrowbarman Member Posts: 478

This is exactly right. In red ranks, you have to take out one of the survivors entirely before 2 gens are remaining, or you are toast..unless you are running a slowdown perk that's still alive like Ruin.

Nope, as killer you won't get to rank 1 if you have to rely on crutches.

    Survivor on the other hand

  • bjorksnasbjorksnas Member Posts: 4,433

As killer you don't have to use crutches to get to rank 1, but it certainly does close in the skill gap of having to win consistently to get to rank 1 in the first place, most people use at least 1 depending on your definition but some players just get good enough that their perks are for having fun more than guaranteeing a win

  • derppugderppug Member Posts: 239

Killer perks seem more crutchy to me than survivor ones. At least, that was my experience playing both sides.
