Just have been banned from online and communications. I called someone a silly ass as a joke on Dead by Daylight because they were calling me a #########, bad and trash. Later after the ban happened so he reported me and I was the banned one. EXCUSE ME? Am I going crazy? I’ve been trash talked, harassed and called many horrible names for a whole year and Xbox did nothing about but when I talk a bit of smack for the first time, it’s like GOD DAMN HE CALLED HIM A SILLY ASS WHEN THE OTHER SAID STUFF EVEN WORSE.... BUT STILL BAN EM! I guy called me a f**ker and I reported it but nothing happened because he was on the next day. Great job Microsoft

Its based on who made the report not what was said.

You got banned for swearing. It doesn't matter that someone else was also doing it. I agree they should also ban the other guy but I'm not the one going around looking into the situations. I think the lesson to be learned here is don't try to defend yourself with the excuse of "well they did it too!".

Never respond to any salty comments, and report and block when they're rude. Words to live by.

Microsoft and Sony are opposites. You can pretty much say anything on psn as long as it's not illegal. /shrug
Just be careful what you write or say to people when you message them regardless of what they say to you because if you don't report them their message goes unnoticed but if they report you it could result in a comms ban or worse.
You cannot get banned from reports, such as "unsporting" or "quit early" etc no matter how many you accumulate, these only effect your reputation such as "needs work" or "avoid me".
Text or voice messages that contain death threats, telling people to kill themself, or calling them racist names with lots of swear words, these kind of messages are what will get you banned if the person on the recieving end reports the message.
I've had a few choice messages sent to me from playing DBD which I didn't retaliate to, I just silently reported the messages and moved on.
A couple of weeks later you get the message from Xbox Live saying that they took action on one or more of your complaints and thanking you for making Xbox Live a safer place etc, that means the result of the reports you made was a comms ban or worse.
I remember someone getting banned on Friday the 13th because several (underage--which F13 team pointed out as the reasoning here) girls were harassing him. He talked ######### back, they said they would talk to their dev friend and get him banned, and subsequently did. The girls never faced any repercussions and just went on to trash talk more people with their dev-protection. That game is cursed. lol

interesting. i do remember xbox seemed to have a handle on such things. ps4...there is no report option. i did have a ps4 mod come into a..... conversation i was having. they messaged me first and were a bit over the top. i tend to enjoy a ready-made spaz and was beginning to be quite amused when one of the messages my new screwball friend sent was deleted by this overlord. nothing more took place and it felt...humbling. a fun interlude and for a moment...i felt safer.

I have had my XBL account for 13 years, and I can tell you that if you get reported they do investigate it. This is why I don't send hate mail to other players anymore. I get tons of it, I just report and block them and move on. If you engage with them they can report you for communication and if you said anything mean Xbox will see it and ban you. I've had many friends get banned for doing this sort of dumb thing.
You can goto enforcement.xbox.com and sign in to see reports against you and your status. I currently have about 25 reports against me, most for "cheating" which I don't do just salty players, some people report my name because they think Xbox will force me to change it (they won't I've had the name for 13 years and I've been told that it is not bannable), and then a few for comms because someone said something salty to me and I just say something like "blocked" or "whatever, gg". Only peiople I send vulgar stuff to are my friends because they won't report me (not hate mail but I will say swear words).
Point is don't give people a reason to report you, and you won't be punished. I report people that send me that stuff all the time and Xbox sends me messages "A player you have reported has had action taken against them". Just block/report and move on.
That might not be true, there are different types of a ban. If you have a comms ban that doesn't show up in your profile. If you have an online ban that will.
Stop being a face camper and so toxic and you won't get banned
