How To Counter Spirit (Without Perks)

KabuKabu Member Posts: 926

Spirit's main power is called Yamoaka's Haunting: This power allows her to move quickly across the map and can give an advantage in chases depending of the experience level of the player. Most of her add ons influence this power such as increasing the movement speed or activation speed.

Spirit's secondary ability is her passive phasing that makes it difficult to track her movements when not using her main power. There are two add ons that very slightly increase the frequency and duration of this passive phasing.

Tips to keep in mind: Spirit has footstep sounds and disturbs crows when phasing. Both of which are noticeable inside her terror radius. She also has an audio cue while phasing(when outside terror radius) that makes a whooshing sound. When you hear her phasing or notice her chasing someone else near you then stop repairing a gen, cleansing totems, searching boxes etc or risk getting grabbed as you will not hear the whooshing sound of her phasing.

As of patch 3.2, Spirit does not move vegetation while phasing through them.

When phasing, Spirit will leave behind a husk which emits her terror radius. Once her power ends the husk disappears and has to wait 15 seconds before it's available again (certain addons can decrease this cooldown). While phasing, she is not able to see survivors directly but other methods of tracking are still available. Methods such as, scratch marks, seeing/hearing vegetation moving as well as hearing footsteps, injured sounds, lockers opening/closing and so on. With an add on called Father's Glasses Spirit is able to see blood.

The following is advice on what to do when a Spirit is chasing you:

If you suspect she's faking her power then run towards a window and slow vault it or flashlight her. If she was phasing she will have to guess if you vaulted the window or not. If she is faking it then you are safer near a window rather than a pallet that wasn't thrown down. If she is not phasing and you try to flashlight her she will move or be blinded. Don't move away from a safe spot or walk towards a safe spot to force her to react. Safe spots such as windows and longer loops.

If you're bold enough, Spirit can be pallet stunned mid phase and while she is coming out of phase. You can throw down a pallet early and play around that though it's most effective while she is phasing. Pallet plays force HER to guess which side you are on if you don't fast vault when unnecessary. Start looping her to force her to phase then feign continuing the loop and run somewhere safer. Most effective if you backtrack while avoiding running back the same exact path to avoid running into her or in a completely different direction. Preferably near another window or thrown pallet.

It's important to keep in mind that when she messes up she is punished with 110% movement speed while her power slowly recharges and then can be looped more easily than other killers.

Spirit can be a tough opponent depending on the experience of the player but it is entirely possible to escape vs a good Spirit. It's difficult, as it should be, but possible. Just as it's possible for a good Spirit to do well against good survivors.

Reserved for a follow up post I want to make regarding how exactly you should go about things like "suspecting she's faking her power"

The problem is she never needs to guess, a good spirit will hear you, injured or not, and know exactly where you are. She is so mobile that there isnt realistically much you can do except guess and pray

This is a guide on countering the Spirit, though, not a discussion thread. You can comment on the guide itself, but debating whether the Spirit is counterable or not is not what this thread is about.

One thing to keep in mind when going against a Spirit is that you need to stay healthy, being healthy is your best bet at making her commit to a mistake. Because when you are injured you are more easier to hear, more easier to track, more easier to get out of the game.

As said by OP, every mistake she makes during and after a phase will force her to be a 110% killer for 15 seconds (15 seconds is a lot of time spent as a 110% killer, mind you.) So what you need to do as a survivor is to force her to make guesses or predict ahead of time what you will do.

Running while injured against a Spirit is a no go. If you are going to run a predictable tile or building, she will catch up to you by predicting where you are going to go. I think this is the most common mistake most survivors make when going against her.

You can't see her, so don't assume she will just be following your scratch marks. If for example you are going to vault over the Badham Preschool fence and run inside the school, she can catch you inside the school by phasing through one of the three other entrances.

Running should not be used to try and get away from her, it should be used as a means to confuse her.

Try this on for example. Most survivors run towards a pallet because it's mostly safe and they have a chance of stunning the Spirit out of phase, allowing them to escape more easily. Now, while healthy you can run towards a pallet while she is phasing (it's more obvious when she is phasing if she stops midchase outside of a loop), but stop before you enter inbetween the pallet. Walk away to the side or maybe crouch if you have Urban Evasion, maybe walk to the other side of the loop, but don't be on the side where the pallet is.

At this point, you're making her guess whether you're waiting near the pallet to possibly stun you or if you are walking away somewhere else. Most Spirit mains will likely go for the pallet because that's what most survivors do, they will go for the most obvious safest option for their survival. But doing so will make you predictable to a Spirit.

I know this thread is about countering Spirit without perks, but Spine Chill really helps in this particular situation. If Spine Chill stops being lit, that's a good indication to start running off. Because by then the Spirit would be inside the pallet and getting ready to go out of her phase to charge her lunge. But in reality, you will be away from her and she will be stuck with a missed attack cooldown and no phasing for a while.

That's just one tactic I usually use against Spirit in survivor games, and it usually works well. But it only really works if you are uninjured. If you are injured, you may need to be a lot more careful with plays like this and resort to getting yourself healed as fast as possible.

I'm saying that since she isn't counter able the guide is kinda pointless, its all just guessing anyways

Some people may find it useful. Telling someone their thread is pointless isn't a constructive comment to make.

I worded it like that to be clickbaitish so people would read it. Tips for survivors who may not have played as Spirit hence the description of her power. I explained as much as I've gone against a few who knew next to nothing about her.

My intention was to provide advice on what to keep in mind when versing a Spirit and what may help give the survivor an advantage.

So, thanks for reading it and commenting.
