Imagine trying to test out a couple hundred permutations of something, which may not always lead to reproducible failure, with every test taking several minutes, with a system where automated/virtual instances cannot (or likely won't) provide the same inputs/environments needed to cause the error in the first place. That's obscure hardware failure testing for you.
